Skalpel - Polish Jazz EP (1999 promo CD-R)

No need to introduce Skalpel, the polish DJ couple that helped Ninja Tune to maintain the rest of the real Ninja sound with their 3 albums of dark breaks and samples from Polskie Nagrania series Polish Jazz, obscure to the world outside Poland until then. I'm not sure about the dating, Discogs say 2000, the felt tip on the disc says 1999. Given to me in May 2000 by DJ Vadim's tour manager, he had a box full of them, so it's no surprise that one of those found its way on Ninja Tune's A&R desk. I've added my favourite Sculpture videoclip for your viewing pleasure.

When I started collecting Ninja Tune some 15 years ago, the four-part DJ Toolz series produced by DJ Jason was kind of holy grail to me - on vinyl only, popularity: high, availability: hard to find. Some years later I bought them all on wax plus this CD in a pawn shop for equivalent of 10 quids. Actually there's not much more beyond the title Break Beats'n'Grooves - a bunch of sampled, looped and replayed solid funk tracks. So bang your head to this or enjoy with a knowing smile... and stay tuned!

Dynamic Syncopation - Dynamism (1999 Ninja Tune)

The first and the better of two albums Jonny Cuba and Loop Professor AKA Dynamic Syncopation recorded for Ninja Tune. Dynamism is full of great hip hop tracks with Mass Influence or Juice Aleem, but I like this album for the same reason as the early The Herbaliser stuff - for those smooth instrumental tracks with chilled beats and juicy samples. No games this time.

Timber comes from 1998 Ninja Tune album Let Us Play; the first Coldcut release after some 5 years (not mentioning their alter ego DJ Food). This EP includes five versions including remixes by drum and bass enfant terrible Clifford Gilberto and swedish producer Jonah Quant plus two versions of great cut-and-paste videoclip. I ripped the videos separately and you can download them in the original file format.
