Farewell to the Year of the Dog

So here I am, sitting here on this last night of the Year 13, waiting for my friends to show up, ready to hit the streets of the Old Town and have some serious fun. It's a New Year somewhere in Asia already so it seems that I have a minute or two to write some stuff out of my hair in this last post of this Year of the Dog.

I had to put my bull terrier lady to sleep two weeks ago. I'm a big bloke proud of certain emotional stability. I'm currently recovering from the worst year of my life, both personally and professionally. I've lost my best friend to cancer, and another friend hung himself for reasons known but to him. I've lost all my clients and almost wound up homeless. Still I wonder how deeply the death of a mere dog struck me.

She was a lousy dog and a great bull terrier. However confusing it may sound, those familiar with this breed know what I mean. She'd had a great life, and though she couldn't continue with her conquest of the world when a tumor on her paw effectively tied her to her chair, she'd spent the last year doing the two next best things: lying in my bed and eating all kinds of forbidden stuff she'd never dreamt of before.

I have no trouble rationalizing the whole situation. I know the time was right and to put an end to it was the best I could have done before things started to get really messy for her. But I still feel a need to justify myself  - to nobody else but myself. And though I know that the 30 kilograms of void beside me will eventually shrink and disappear, and soon I will be able to look in the corner where her chair used to stand without that pain in my chest, I will always miss her deep inside of me. But the dogs who were truly loved will never be forgotten anyway. Rest in peace, Kočička.

Also I seem to have lost my blog for good. Not that I'm not willing to go on with my smart remarks on times and music of my youth. It's just that sad fact that of all those thousands former Future Vintage blog readers not more than a handful have confided in me enough to jump on my new scheme, and when I say handful, I really mean it - if I invited all the new Future Vintage members in my place, we'd be all sitting comfortably. I have to admit that it was the bitterest pill of all I had to swallow this year. Perhaps I will be able to get back in the saddle and carry on. If not, I will find a way to pay back all of those who put trust and money in this blog. You know who you are and I thank you very much for keeping the faith.

Let me cut this somewhat longish post off in an unusual way. My readers know my passion for Jay Alanski and his project A Reminiscent Drive. To my greatest joy, Side Effects, my bootleg compilation of ARD rare tracks, has been one of the most downloaded titles from the Future Vintage Vaults series. If you share my passion for his works, you ought to head straight to your favourite music dealer and buy the freshly released Zoom Back Camera compilation of his works from the Mercy Street era. This double disc jewel was released on Peacelounge label as a sequel to their recent reissues of both ARD albums and when I say that these guys did a hell of a job here, it's not because they have quoted from my post twice in their Mercy Street reissue press release ;).

Gotta go. If you are a Future Vintage member, enjoy the two FVV compilations below. If not, have a great 2014 anyway.

Stay tuned!

The future ain't what it used to be

Once upon a time there was a blog called Future Vintage. Since its birth in the summer of 2009 it was spreading joy and good time among the numerous crowd of its readers... until it was crashed and smashed by an evil giant called Gugol. Even though Future Vintage did little or no harm to Gugol and his equally evil brethren, the sniffers, one sunny morning it was no more. The saddenned readers were looking here, there and everywhere, but all they have found was an empty screen where Future Vintage used to be. They went to ask Gugol but he claimed there never was such place as Future Vintage. Gugol was so evil that he had killed not only the blog, but attempted to erase any sign of its father, 70's Baby Early 80's Child.

Several weeks later the joy and good time returned - the Future Vintage was back again. Happy were the readers until they realized there was something different, something odd about this new blog. To trick and befool the vigilant and watchful Gugol, the Future Vintage was not as friendly and open as it used to be. Remembering how incredibly laborious was to raise from the dead, the reborn Future Vintage now had to choose new friends cautiously lest he let the sniffers in and let them wreak havoc again. Where there was wide open gate once, a tiny door was left for the readers to get inside. But that was not enough - every reader had to pass the test to prove his good will and commitment.

Not many of the 500.000 readers were willing or able to pass that test, but once they did, a whole new world opened in front of them. The new Future Vintage was now safer and better for that brave bunch. There were new posts showing up every couple of days, the links were appearing in their email miraculously and did not expire or vanish anymore. Since the sniffers were not able to find anything to report to Gugol, the blog was safe, and everyone was downloading and enjoying the music happily ever after. The end.

Yes, Future Vintage is finally back but it's not what it used to be. As you see, major changes have been made. The powers that be forced me to abandon the open house scheme and turn the Future Vintage into an exclusive club. For obvious reasons, there are no more links in the comments section. All you will find there is a documents that will give you answers to all your FAQs.

Read it carefully and consider the pluses and minuses of my offer. It's no secret to me that a massive majority of the original fan base were here just because there was free music up for grabs. But I firmly believe that at least 1% of you readers are not just takers, otherwise I wouldn't burn my precious time in attempt to put Future Vintage back on track. With you on my side, I'm sure the fairytale would eventually come true.

Today happens to be my birthday and the Future Vintage relaunch is the best present I could give myself. As a little push for you, here comes my special b-day offer: Every new BASIC member will get the REGULAR membership benefits. PLUS all BASIC memberships start with The Remix According To Peshay post. The offer is valid until September 30th.

Stay tuned!

The Remix According To Fila Brazillia (2013 Future Vintage Vaults)

There can hardly be a better artist to start a new era of Future Vintage than Fila Brazillia. Don't expect anything like those two classic smooth flowing collections released years ago. These 25 remixes by messrs Cobby and McSherry show that there's a stray dog underneath all that shiny fur. Surely there's a reason why some of these tracks were left behind, but listen to the Rhodes-fuelled home studio sessions, furious hip hop breaks, crazy sambadrome drumming, and you'll see there's gold to be found on this scrapheap. Some of the tracks, long forgotten or just slept-on, were truly surprising to me - different version of Sven Väth's Fusion, the Cornershop space funk disco and both Lypid mixes, to name a few. I wish I had those two remixes for The Twilight Singers to make this collection even more comprehensive. Sadly, this compilation is also a swan song for the Pork Recordings blog that is no more.

101 Ultramarine-Urf (Fila Brazillia Remix)
102 Snooze-The Chase (Revisited by Fila Brazillia)
103 Fluke-Josh (Remixed by Fila Brazillia)

Dead Labels Society launches today

Originally posted on June 28, 2013

When I mentioned Dead Labels Society some two months ago, it was a figure of speech more than a real concept. But the number of your ideas and suggestions that followed, and also the relative success of Pork Recordings blog (expecting 100.000th reader any day now) convinced me to give it a try. Plus I'm no longer satisfied with dropping random albums and need a new challenge from time to time. So Dead Labels Society it is. I took a deep dive into the vaults and came back with material for about a dozen Dead Labels Society posts, ranging from ambient thru breakbeat and IDM to techno. Please don't expect labels like Moving Shadow (which would deserve a blog of its own though I'm pretty sure it would be swept away pretty soon) or labels that formed the sound of 1990s underground but are still active or relaunched, like Peacefrog or Hydrogen Dukebox. But I'm sure we can have a lot of fun while preserving music that wouldn't stand the test of commercial pressure otherwise.

Though my posting frequency was somewhat frozen by the time-consuming Dead Labels Society research, the many fans of Future Vintage Vaults series should not feel threatened by this new toy of mine. New FVV posts are ready and will appear regularly. Perhaps you may want to consider using the Donate button, every donation gives me a wake-up slap and points me in the right direction;)

Dead Labels Society: WIGWAM

The Wigwam label is a typical member of Dead Labels Society - a label that effectively ceased to exist. Though it had once been a home to such giants of 1990's German electronic scene as Wolfram Spyra and Bernd "Burnt" Friedmann, there's is such incredible lack of information around the net that some paranoic freaks could find it a strong foundation for a new conspiration theory. And as it would not be a good conspiration story without an invisible ink involved, listen to this - after I've failed to g**gle any useful info, I just thought no problem, all I need is to check those old fax sheets I used to keep with my promo copies. And guess what - what I found was just slips of yellow paper with some cryptic brownish spots.

So let's sum up all there is to know about Wigwam: founded circa 1993 in Nürnberg on ruins of the Toxikk Trakks techno label; management unknown, with strong ties to Kunsthochschule Kassel (the legendary art-school that stands behind Documenta, possibly the most exclusive new art exhibition that takes place in Kassel every 5 years).

The label's catalogue contains only 8 titles, two of which have number 7. WIGWAM01 was amongst the First 50 posts on Future Vintage and you can still find it here. Don't bother looking for WIGWAM 2, the legendary The Final Corporate Colonization Of The Unconscious by Drome. The album was licensed to Ninja Tune in 1994 and I'm not going to post it here; no thanks to the same begrudging bastards who are behind the recent takedown of all ntone posts. Unfortunately I was unable to find one of the WIGWAM 7's; The Second Trancemitter compilation just went MIA during the years. Also the WIGWAM05, the Lost Legion Sampler is missing because I only had it as a white label cassette, and I got rid of those years ago. If you have any of these, I encourage you to share with us and make the Advanced Contemplative Music label collection complete.

Drome - The Final Corporate Remix Of The Unconscious (1993 Wigwam)

Although the title of this 6-track minialbum refers to The Final Corporate Colonization Of The Unconscious, there are actually only two tracks remixed: a concise dub of Age Of Affordable Retina and far out ambient version of Nuzzling. Intensely percussive Hypo Bank with sweet fretless bass is an early version of Hypho Bannk from their third and last album Dromed, released in 1995. The rest of the tracks is very Drome - intelligent, complex and distinctive.

This is WIGWAM 2

Nonplace Urban Field (1993 Wigwam)

Frankly I have no idea where Drome ends and Nonplace Urban Field starts. Both Burnt's projects share so many textures and samples, NUF being perhaps jazzier and even more twisted, that I can only think of commercial reasons. The eponymous debut album is built around five-part ambient opus Chilled, just close your eyes and this music really creates a mood of its own. Plus I love that pixel trash for a cover, ultra low resolution is a resolution too, right?

This is WIGWAM 4

Ohmega Tribe - Anodyne Wisdohm (1995 Wigwam)

Not much info on Ohmega Tribe – they were Italians but that's just a wild guess based on their names and the fact that their only album Anodyne Wisdohm was originally released on the Alchemax Industries label in 1994. It was licensed to Wigwam and also to Silent Records for the US market a year later, which is quite an achievement for the notoriously poor Italian techno scene. BTW I just don't understand that Photoshop frenzy instead of a cover art, both Alchemax and Silent editions have respectble period graphic design. The album contains eight tracks of mellow techno ambient, imagine Model 500 on prozac. A lot of prozac, in fact. If you're fan of repetitive textures, dreamy pads and rather flat beats, and looking for a new musical wallpaper, this tribe is the right pick.

This is WIGWAM06

Spyra - Homelistening Is Killing Clubs (1995 Wigwam)

The opening uptempo track ADSR from this debut album by Kunsthochschule Kassel alumnus Wolfram Spyra may sound little too formal, cold or distant compared to other Wigwam releases, but let the album play until the post-kraut ambient symphony Future Of The Past and it becomes apparent why Spyra's following works appeared on legendary labels like Manikin (a home of Berlin School) or the late Pete Namlook's Fax +49-69/450464. The female vocal on Ebb happens to speak my native language: "What interests me is magnets, the gravitation, their pairing, the weight, the vibration, the light, the velocity... No touch, no option, the velocity, the duration, the beginning..." I'm sure how much was lost in the original translation from German, but we call this babbling where I come from;)

The Remix According To Peshay (2013 Future Vintage Vaults)

Originally posted on June 23, 2013

Paul Pesce AKA Peshay started his career just 20 years ago with a dub plate on the notorious Reinforced Records and continued to scatter his inches on many fancy drum'n'bass labels like Good Looking and Metalheadz throughout the 90's. Although he had signed with Mo'Wax in 1995, we had to wait for his debut album until 1999. Miles From Home was released on Island's short-lived label Blue just in time to become the year's drum'n'bass fav for me, followed closely by Weekend World by E-Z Rollers and Krust's Coded Language. Peshay's cool mixture of jazzy licks, unique atmospheres and complex heavyweight breakbeats shows in this Future Vintage Vaults collection of 19 remixes from the era we all love. Stay tuned!

It's raining, man..

Once again the Future Vintage is in danger, this time because of the wrath of nature. Although I live in a beautiful place with baroque arches, it is situated damn near the bank of Vltava river which seems to be flooding the neighborhood as I write this. I'm not really worried to see the river at my doorstep but as I happen to be in the town in a state of emergency, I can expect electricity shutdowns and other troubles pretty soon. The last time the town was flooded, about 11 years ago (see above), it took a month to get it back on track, so today's batch can as well be the last post for a while. Ok, so much for meteorology, now let's go back to more pleasant things.

Some time ago I was having an interesting skype conversation with a lady friend of mine who used to be my girlfriend for a while back in the daze. The thing was, I gave her access to my files to serve herself to some old music. Some days later she wrote she couldn't really remember listening to any of the stuff, which of course gave me some surprise.

Well, yeah, I had to admit that maybe I'm just too focused on late 90s and perhaps I'm just too much into music styles appreciated by men, which also explains why the majority of Future Vintage readers seems to be male.

Remember the days when a good mixtape was the smoothest way to get some? Would I really play this music to my girfriend 20 years ago? Of course not. Who was I kidding? So I took a deep dive to come up with some true pearls to please our female companion. Perhaps your better halves will feel it the same way. May we be forgiven for our noisy hobby. Have fun and good luck!

Nicolette - Now Is Early (1992 Shut Up And Dance/1997 Studio !K7)

You probably know her as one of the Massive Attack vocalists, but back in the daze when we used to say rave instead of house party and vitamin E instead of ecstasy, Nicolette was a member of rave gang Shut Up & Dance and a voice of their early hits School Of The World and Single Minded People. The notorious couple PJ and Smiley of Shut Up & Dance also produced her solo debut Now Is Early, released on their own label. It was probably too early then, because the days had come for Nicolette after the Protection success. She was signed by Gilles Peterson and recorded Let No One Live Rent Free In Your Head for Talkin' Loud. Ironically, you can find the first version of No Government, the single that made her famous as a solo artist, here on Now Is Early. The album was remastered by Electrolux artist Chris Zippel and reissued with some bonus material by german label Studio !K7 in 1997.

mp3 I 320kbps I 49 minutes I 118mb I link in comments

Shara Nelson - What Silence Knows (1993 Cooltempo)

She is notable for providing the vocals on the Massive Attack song Unfinished Sympathy, discogs says, but I think there's a whole lot more to this lady with a voice that reminds me of the best days of Shirley Bassey. That's why I decided to dedicate a FVV collection to her collaborations and guest appearences sometimes soon. Her debut album What Silence Knows has Motown roots and head in acid jazz clouds. The music was written by wide spectrum of musicians including Prince Be (of PM Dawn), Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (of Saint Etienne), John Coxon (of Spiritualized and later Spring Heel Jack), Howie B. and Style Scott (of On-U Sound fame), and produced by Michael Peden, the head of Zomba Management, but anyhow.. it's mostly the voice.

mp3 I 320kbps I 48 minutes I 117mb I link in comments

Drum Club - Everything Is Now (1993 Butterfly)

I remember waking up to that wake up, wake up, wake up phrase from Sound System because the girl I used to live with twenty years ago had never failed to put this CD in my stereo to play as an alarm clock in the morning. So when I got to listen to it again these days, I was surprised how good the album actually is. Charlie Hall and Lol Hammond (who is also responsible for the brilliant Damage album with Roger Eno) started on Guerilla Records in 1992 with floorfiller single Alchemy and soon were signed for Butterfly label of Big Life Records, a home of intelligent electronica back then. The line-up for Everything Is Now includes Steve Hillage, Emma Anderson from Lush and Kate Holmes, who is also known to Future Vintage readers as Scuba and was, by the way, a wife of Creation Records head honcho Alan McGhee. The booklet  includes pics by the late cult photographer Sally Harding. What else should I say about this album?

Once again the blog is saved...

...thanks to.. no, it wasn't you but our reader Tim whose generous donation made it possible for Future Vintage to push a little forward. And, of course, I also want to thank all you 1-dollar donors including my fav reader from Chahya Garden in Belize. But don't expect I'm done nagging about donations. I'm sure there's got to be some fun way to make you help me kick this can down the road. Otherwise we're going to face this blog closedown situation again sooner or later. As always, I'm open to your suggestions of all kinds.

So what's in the bucket? There will some more FVV releases, some of them already finished and ready for upload (which seems to be my weakness these days as my connection is still far from decent). Also get ready for more albums and compilations. Some of you may have experienced the situation when you were searching for something that used to be on this blog for sure and is no more. Well, there's been a shitstorm of complaints followed by takedowns recently, mostly Ninja Tune and ntone stuff, so in the future I'll have to stick to less classic labels, perhaps even create something I call Dead Labels Society for myself. Have no fears, I've got records for years.

Enjoy the new FVV compilation below and stay tuned!

Goodbye and thank you

Yes, I'm a lousy blogger and I'm not going to apologize or explain myself this time. I've spent the time since the last post on New Year's Eve wisely struggling for bare existence.

I always knew the time will come and Future Vintage will cease to exist, either for the lack of interest of the readers or by the hand of The Man. It's a miracle it took so long, with so little posts taken down (two, in fact). It was fun, wasn't it? Now it's time to say goodbye and thank you.

If you were wondering what's behind recent activity (see new posts below), it's because I decided to empty all the files left unposted in my RS account on you in one go. Grab it while you can (and you do - as I'm writing this, some of the new files were downloaded 10 - 25x). The account expires on April 25 and I'm not going to extend it simply because I'm even more broke than ever.

Don't worry, I'm not asking for donations this time. Last time I did, there happened to be no more than 3 (three) generous donors amongst thousands of you readers. You know who you are and I thank you again. No wonder I stopped believing that some miraculous sponsor will appear to help me cover the expenses.

Mission accomplished. The 500.000th happy visitor of Future Vintage is expected any minute now. Some stats: 458 files (53.25GB) were downloaded 264.209 times (yes, I counted it with my 1980's pocket Casio). You don't need a calculator to see that if there was 1 cent donated per file, this blog would go on forever.

I hope that that with the posts below I've fulfilled some of your request piling up in my email. Too bad the rest of the FVV collections will please noone but me and my friends. But life happens and who am I to oppose.

Stay tuned!

Compilations, compilations... There's never enough of them. Especially the good ones. When it comes to US artists and producers, you never can be wrong with those released on californian label Ubiquity. Since 1993 these guys from Costa Mesa were always the best, followed closely by long time gone Shadow / Instinct from NYC. The first two volumes of five-part No Categories series showcase the best of contemporary post-acid jazz and trip hop from the label's catalogue. Most of the tracks have passed the test of time incredibly well and even today they present more that just a snaphot from the glorious past of Ubiquity.

VA Bastard Tracks (1995 Different Drummer)

Bastard Tracks was the first label compilation released on Different Drummer, a label founded by Rockers HiFi members back in 1993. What started as a reaction on growing popularity of ambient dub style in the early 90's, resulted in about 30 great albums and compilations eleven years later, some of which I truly miss until today. If you liked the legendary four-part Ambient Dub compendium (released on Beyond between 1992 and 1995), Bastard Tracks is a sure shot for you.

Pre Fade Listening - Solarized (2000 Different Drummer)

This second album by German project Pre Fade Listening is the best Different Drummer release I own. Contains 14 atmospheric dubs including my fav Mr. Medicine Man (with vocals by Tikiman) and a remix of Dub Syndicate's Struggle. Pre Fade Listening changed their name to PFL later and their Blue Dubsessions Pt.1 (released on Electrolux in 2003) is recommended listening.

Ponga - The Remixes (1999 Loosegroove)

While the original Ponga production is pretty hard-to-swallow free jazz improvisation, this remix collection puts their squeeking and screetching galore on more audible wheels of breakbeats. I'm sure the Future Vintage readers will enjoy the tracks by Amon Tobin, Fila Brazillia and Spacetime Continuum, to name a few.

Alex Cortiz - Volume 1 (1998 Vibesin' Dutchman)

The Dutch producer Alex Cortiz is better known for his nu jazz releases after 2000 but his early tracks are definitely worth listening. Volume 1 contains a dozen of atmospheric grooves so good that it became my bedside favourite when I got it as a homemade demo CD from some Dutch DJ. Some of the tracks appeared on Cortiz debut album Moodfood in 2000.

Outcast - No Strings Attached (1998 Kingsize)

I can't say much about this album as it came in plastic bag with no details. The discogs won't say much about it either. Apparently it was produced by certain Davide Arcoleo so don't mix it with the Beaumont Hannant project of the same name. Anyway, it's a collection of jazzy breakbeats with some live instruments that will do no harm and maybe even please some of you.

Jake Slazenger - Makesaracket (1995 Clear)

Lounge meets IDM on this great album by Mike Paradinas aka µ-Ziq, released on Clear, one of the best overlooked electronic labels of the 90's. Unlike the usual µ-Ziq production, Makesaracket shows the funkier side of knob-twiddling. There's also a sequel to this, released on Warp one year later, but it's just too warp-ish to me.

Nookie feat. Larry Heard - Paradise (1998 Labello Blanco)

The master of smooth drum'n'bass beats meets the legendary Mr. Fingers on this collection of soothing atmospheric songs produced specially for lazy Sunday afternoons.

Urchin - Urchin (1999 Waveform)

Back in the daze, when I posted Kosmosis In Dub, a remix collection of Mr. Electric Triangle, I failed to recognize that some of the mixes were in fact produced by Urchin under the Red Rum moniker. Well, I offer my apologies and also this sweet album which will please fans of the deep trip hop sound from The Prunes to Portishead.

Carl Hancock Rux - Rux Revue (1999 550 Music)

The debut album by Harlem born and bred slam poet Carl Hancock Rux, whose pefrormance always reminded me of somehow twisted Gil Scott-Heron. The music side of this collection was produced by The Dust Brothers (the American project of Fight Club fame, not The Chemical Brothers). For more Rux check older albums by David Holmes,Yukihiro Fukutomi and DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid.
